SOUNZ Centre for New Zealand Music

When I first came to New Zealand in 2005, I was amazed by the richness of musical life there and the range, ambition, and quality of the composers. Ross in particular is someone whose modesty and elusiveness hide a composer who, had he been born in Europe and been published by Boosey or Schott, would be world famous by now. His second symphony is one of the most beautiful and moving contemporary pieces it has been my privilege to hear, and I was very proud to oversee its world premiere and organise its European premiere (Aziz Shokhakimov was there). A big shout out to Madeleine Pierard whose voice has been an integral part of its success.
